Not every Liam Neeson action movie needs to reinvent the genre to be entertaining. Over the years, the actor has appeared in quite a few action thrillers of varying quality, and while some have been considerably less successful than others, The Mongoose is certainly far from the worst of them. In fact, there are even moments when this low-budget action thriller turns out to be a surprisingly enjoyable genre effort. It might not offer anything particularly original, but thanks to its pacing, entertaining action sequences and a reasonably good performance from Neeson, it manages to be more entertaining than you might initially expect.
A Surprisingly Effective Low-Budget Action Movie
One of the more interesting things about The Mongoose is how effectively it manages to work around its relatively limited budget. Rather than constantly relying on spectacular explosions, excessive gunfire or elaborate action sequences, director Mark Vanselow takes a considerably more straightforward approach. The movie is essentially built around one extended car chase, with the story following Liam Neeson's character as he attempts to escape the police.
This approach works surprisingly well. By focusing so heavily on the chase itself, the filmmakers manage to create a movie that feels considerably bigger than its resources might suggest. There is enough variation in the action to keep things interesting, and the film generally does a pretty good job of making its central premise work.
Of course, this isn't exactly the most spectacular action movie you'll see this year, and there are moments when the limitations of the production become apparent. Nevertheless, The Mongoose deserves some credit for finding a relatively creative way to make the most of what it has available.
A Familiar Story That Still Manages to Work
When it comes to its story, The Mongoose doesn't exactly bring anything particularly new to the table. The basic premise of a man being wrongly accused of a crime and having to prove his innocence while being pursued by the authorities is something we've seen countless times before in both movies and television series.
As a result, the story never becomes particularly compelling or unpredictable. There aren't many surprises to be found, and the overall narrative is hardly something that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.
Still, the movie manages to make its familiar premise work reasonably well. Its pacing is generally quite good, and there are enough entertaining action moments to keep things moving. Interestingly, the film also offers a little more variety than you might expect from a movie that revolves so heavily around a single extended car chase.
This is largely thanks to its willingness to spend time with several different characters. Rather than focusing exclusively on Neeson's character and his attempts to escape, the film occasionally shifts its attention to the people surrounding him. This gives the narrative a little more variety and helps prevent the central chase from becoming too repetitive.
Liam Neeson and Marisa Tomei Are Solid Additions to the Cast
Liam Neeson is, once again, perfectly enjoyable in this kind of role. However, one of the more welcome aspects of his performance is that the movie doesn't simply rely on him to deliver action sequences. His character is given enough dramatic material to allow Neeson to explore some of the emotional aspects of the story as well.
This makes his performance considerably more engaging than it might otherwise have been. Neeson has become something of a familiar presence in these kinds of action thrillers, but The Mongoose at least gives him a little more to work with than simply running around and fighting people.
Marisa Tomei is another welcome addition to the cast. She brings some much-needed personality to the movie and works quite well alongside Neeson. Their characters' personal history provides an additional dramatic element that helps give the story a little more substance.
Unfortunately, the flashback sequences are considerably less successful. They often feel rather unnecessary and distracting, especially since the actors playing the younger versions of these characters aren't particularly convincing. Rather than adding something meaningful to the overall narrative, these scenes mostly interrupt the flow of the movie.
The Mongoose Wastes Some of Its More Interesting Thriller Elements
Perhaps the biggest missed opportunity in The Mongoose is the way it handles its thriller elements. The idea of Neeson's character being accused of a crime he didn't commit and having to find a way to prove his innocence potentially offers some of the most interesting material in the entire movie.
There is certainly room for a more engaging thriller here, particularly when it comes to the uncertainty surrounding the accusations and the consequences of being hunted by the authorities. However, these elements gradually take a backseat to the action, with the movie becoming increasingly focused on the chase itself.
That isn't necessarily a terrible thing, considering that the action is ultimately what keeps the film entertaining. Still, it does feel like a somewhat missed opportunity. The movie could have benefited from spending more time developing its mystery and thriller aspects, rather than allowing them to fade into the background so easily.
In some ways, this also prevents The Mongoose from becoming something more memorable. It has the ingredients for a reasonably interesting thriller, but ultimately seems much more interested in delivering a straightforward action experience.
Final Verdict: The Mongoose Is a Surprisingly Enjoyable Liam Neeson Action Movie
Ultimately, The Mongoose is a fairly entertaining action thriller that manages to get more out of its relatively limited resources than you might expect. Its story is familiar, its thriller elements could have been developed considerably better, and some of its flashback sequences feel rather unnecessary. Nevertheless, the movie has enough going for it to make for an enjoyable viewing experience.
The action is reasonably entertaining, the pacing is generally solid, and Liam Neeson delivers a good performance that benefits from having a little more dramatic material to work with. Marisa Tomei is also a welcome addition, while the decision to focus on several different characters gives the movie more variety than its central premise might initially suggest.
It certainly isn't one of the more memorable action thrillers of recent years, and there are plenty of things that could have been handled better. However, considering some of Neeson's more disappointing recent action efforts, The Mongoose is actually a pleasant surprise.
It may not be particularly original or ambitious, but it gets the job done. Sometimes, that's more than enough.
