Spa Weekend (2026) Review - A Very Unrelaxing Comedy

Spa Weekend tries to deliver a lighthearted comedy in which a group of women head off for a relaxing weekend at a luxury spa, only to find that relaxation is the last thing they are going to experience. The ingredients for a comedy are certainly there: a luxurious spa, an ensemble cast filled with familiar comedy actresses, interpersonal frustrations, and plenty of opportunities for awkward situations. Unfortunately, the humor turns out to be one of the film's biggest weaknesses. Spa Weekend is a movie that constantly tries to be funny, but mostly ends up trying far too hard.

Spa Weekend Is Mostly Just Very Silly

Humor is extremely subjective, but I think it is fair to say that the vast majority of viewers will probably not get much enjoyment out of the silliness Spa Weekend has to offer. The film is almost constantly throwing another joke, mishap, or awkward situation at the audience. The pace is frantic, and the characters barely have time to behave normally before the next comedic situation arrives.

Ultimately, this becomes more exhausting than funny.

The characters behave incredibly immaturely and continuously get themselves into trouble at a very rapid pace. Spa Weekend seems to simply hope that somewhere among all these antics, something will stick from a comedic perspective. Occasionally, something does, but far more often it feels as though the movie is simply trying very hard to make you laugh.

The Dialogue May Be the Biggest Problem

Perhaps the weakest aspect of the movie is the dialogue. Many conversations feel like they were written around the joke that is supposed to come at the end, which means the characters rarely sound like real people. One punchline follows another, while very little is done to make the characters feel like believable human beings.

That makes it difficult to become emotionally invested in the situations they find themselves in. When almost everyone is constantly behaving in an exaggerated manner, the contrast that can make comedy work so well simply disappears.

Over-the-Top Comedy Characters

Essentially, all of the characters are huge comedy stereotypes, which are then exaggerated another hundred times. The movie seems to have very little confidence in subtle humor and therefore consistently chooses the most obvious version of every character.

That does not mean stereotypes cannot be funny. They absolutely can be, especially when a movie knowingly uses them and then does something unexpected with them. Spa Weekend, however, rarely does that. The characters remain mostly exactly who you expect them to be from the moment they are introduced.

As a result, the comedy becomes extremely predictable.

Talented Comedy Actresses Are Given Very Little to Work With

It is honestly somewhat surprising that so many talented comedy actresses agreed to appear in this movie and went along with its silly humor and childish dialogue. The cast clearly has plenty of experience with comedy, but the material simply does not always give them enough to work with.

You regularly get the impression that the actors and actresses are trying to get more out of the scenes than what is actually present in the script.

Surprisingly, the Male Characters Are the Most Enjoyable

Although Spa Weekend is primarily centered around its female characters, it is actually the male characters who make the movie somewhat worthwhile.

That may be one of the more surprising aspects of the film. The male characters generally feel more grounded and realistic. As a result, there is a little more relatability in their scenes. The male actors also generally handle the dialogue and comedy of the movie reasonably well.

They do not seem to be trying quite as hard to be funny, and ironically, that makes some of their moments work better.

A Simple Story With Predictable Subplots

The main story of Spa Weekend is very simple and relies heavily on its various subplots. That makes it even stranger that the movie seems to put so little effort into them.

The storylines are all very standard and predictable. You can see many of the developments coming from miles away, and when the movie eventually arrives at its inevitable conclusions, there is very little satisfaction to be found.

A comedy obviously does not need a complicated story. In fact, a simple plot can work perfectly well when the characters, situations, and jokes are strong enough. But when both the main story and the subplots offer very few surprises, there simply is not much left to hold your attention.

Spa Weekend Barely Uses Its Spa Setting

Perhaps even stranger is how little Spa Weekend actually does with its own setting. A spa is an excellent location for a comedy. You have luxury treatments, group activities, awkward situations, conflicting expectations, and plenty of opportunities for absurd situations.

Yet the spa ultimately feels more like a backdrop than an important part of the movie.

The film could have done so much more with the setting. Instead, large portions of the story could just as easily have taken place in a hotel, resort, or any other vacation destination. As a result, the title almost feels more interesting than the actual movie.

Conclusion: Spa Weekend Is Missing One Important Ingredient – Good Humor

Spa Weekend has a decent premise and a cast with plenty of comedic talent, but the final product does very little with either. The movie relies heavily on silly humor, exaggerated characters, and childish dialogue. The frantic pace also leaves very little room for more subtle comedy or moments that can actually land.

The male characters and actors manage to keep the movie somewhat afloat, particularly because their scenes feel more grounded. But they cannot prevent Spa Weekend from ultimately becoming a predictable and uninspired comedy.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment is that the movie had so much more potential thanks to its cast and spa setting. Instead, we get an endless stream of silly jokes, stereotypical characters, and predictable situations.
